So-called TonguesThis page is a central collection hub for various thoughts and links to information related to both the Biblical view of the Holy Spirit's gift of a tongue (known language), contrasted with the Pentecostal/charismatic phenomena of "speaking in [so-called] tongues." The modern-day religious phenomena bears little resemblance to the biblical "gift of tongues" sovereignly bestowed by God the Holy Spirit and recorded in Scripture. BIBLICAL TONGUES:
NEURO-TONGUES: The ANS (autonomic nervous system) counter-argument, presented in Miles Stanford's Neuro-Tongues, remains valid. While neuro-science since K. Brooks day has come along way, the larynx is still included with/in parts of the body having ANS connections. It is no surprise that there is no evidence of genuine language or that the brain's frontal lobe (the seat of cognition and language) is not active when the Pentecostal speaks in so-called tongues (phonetic gibberish). This serves to suggest an ANS causation, not something "spiritual." Note how the "pastor" could conjure his practice of "speaking in tongues" at will, or the role of music as a trigger mechanism with the second subject. The biblical record of genuine tongues includes neither of these attributes. Over time, charismatic tongues speakers develop a particular psycho-physical pathology wherein engaging in a so-called tongue produces their experience of "being swept up in an ecstatic religious feeling." While they attribute the ecstasy to the Holy Spirit, it is in fact an ANS response which releases brain chemicals that stimulate pleasure centers in the brain similar to sexual intercourse/masturbation, or the effect of various neuro-compounds (natural or synthetic drugs) which also produce a rush of emotional/body ecstasy. Thus, we discover an understandable reluctance to entertain the neurological explanation for what's happening to them and to cease the habit. However, in addition to their chronic financial and sexual scandals, the Pentecostal/charismatic community keeps hidden from the outside world, the high percentage of individuals who suffer nervous breakdown from the practice and wind up hospitalized. Q. How and why would the genuine "gift of the Holy Spirit" produce such results? A. Of course, it wouldn't. The painful reality is that the Pentecostal/charismatic community is overcome with habitual lying and ever increasing levels of deception, both toward themselves and the outside world. It is a religious cancer which has spread around the globe. |
