CRISIS IN PUBLIC EDUCATIONTwo-thirds of our students can't cut it in math. Big deal, right? Soon we'll hear all of the old excuses and myths: The schools need more money; teachers don't get paid enough; charter and private schools are elitist and the [so-called] rich kids who attend them would do well anywhere; home schoolers are socially deficient and usually religious nuts anyway; vouchers are just a risky scheme that benefit the rich and give public money to religious schools (gasp!)--yadda, yadda, yadda. So we'll keep fiddling with the public schools. Meanwhile, the home-school rolls will swell to exceed 2 million, then 3 million and more. Private and charter schools will continue to demonstrate excellence, variety and choice, and millions more will enroll. These students will continue to occupy the top positions in scholastic competitions around the country and the world. More and more often they will be the best and the brightest at our universities. The educational market is speaking and will not be denied. The public school system is destined to collapse [like the old Soviet government] under its own blind and bloated weight, while it watches the accelerating exodus of students from discerning and caring families.
