WithChrist.org affirms the classic
evangelical Protestant doctrines of General & Special Revelation.
This has been my personally-held view for over forty years.
WithChrist.org is dedicated to a biblical framework for interpreting
Scripture built upon the recovery
of truth contained in the Pauline epistles, which more-or-less began with
Martin Luther (1483–1546), the Protestant Reformation (first stage), and
was followed by John N. Darby (1800–1882) and the early Plymouth
Brethren (second stage). Dan R. Smedra
General revelation
is a term used by Christian theologians and students of the Bible to denote
a level of knowledge about God universally
available based on the observable order of the
created universe. General revelation operates on the level of man's
five senses and precludes the supernatural. Psalm 19:1-4 reads:
"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his
hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display
knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the
world." Further, the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 1: "For
since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power
and divine nature-- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has
been made, so that men are without excuse [as to the knowledge of God's
existence]." Mankind's unique characteristics of
personality, rationality and morality testify to an uncommon origin, despite
any and all efforts to deny their significance.
Special revelation
is used to explain the direct, supernatural communication of God's mind
(thoughts) and person to select individuals. It is best analogous to
the personal, communicative relationships that form and develop one human to
another. The opening sentence of the book of Hebrews states, "In
the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and
in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom
he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe."
This level of knowledge is NOT universally available, rather it is
given by God supernaturally to those who are born again (John 3:3).
"...we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and
that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers
of this age understand it, for if they had, they would not have crucified
the Lord of Glory. However, as it is written: No eye has seen, no ear
has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love
him. But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit" (1 Cor.
2:7-10).
