SCRIPTURAL
CHRISTIANITY
This compilation of
Papers which comprises TRI-S-XVI is meant to more fully establish the growing believer in
the one Source of Christianity--the ascended and glorified Lord Jesus Christ.
Having positioned the believer in the glorified Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of
the Father, the Holy Spirit's primary ministry is to focus his affection, fellowship and
worship upon "Him that filleth all in all" (Eph. 1: 23).
When the Lord Jesus was on earth He said of the Holy Spirit, "He shall glorify
Me" (John 16:14). Now, in this present dispensation, the Spirit glorifies Him at the
right hand of the Father. And while He is there we are instructed by Paul to "seek
those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set
your affection on things above, not on things on the earth" (Col. 3:1,2).
In setting forth the ministry of the Holy Spirit in John 16:13 and 14, the Lord Jesus
said that "He shall not speak of Himself," or from Himself, or about Himself;
rather, "He shall glorify Me." The Arminian charismatic movement is
diametrically opposed to both of these statements of the Lord Jesus. They not only center
upon the "Holy Ghost," but also upon "Jesus" in His pre-Cross
humiliation. The general result of these errors is a fleshly, cultic, half-Jewish and
half-Christian religion. It is not spiritual Christianity in any sense of the Word, nor is
it a result of the ministry of the Holy Spirit. "He shall glorify Me": the
ascended, glorified Lord Jesus Christ.
The movement based upon Calvinistic Covenant theology also deviates from the
true ministry of the Holy Spirit. Like Arminianism its perspective is still predominantly
earthly, having mainly to do with the reformation of religion and reclamation of the
earth, e.g., "bring America back to God." It, too, over-emphasizes the pre-Cross
ministry of the Messiah, which dealt exclusively with the nation of Israel, the law, and
the millennial kingdom. This erroneous emphasis tends to bar its ministry from being
centered in the risen Lord Jesus Christ--who is the focal point of the work of the Holy
Spirit.
The Bible Church movement is foundationally sound in its doctrine. While it does
not actually deviate from the Holy Spirit's true ministry, for the most part it falls far
short of it. Because of this lack, it is somewhat subject to a combination of
self-centered Arminianism and law-centered Calvinism. The ministry of this movement is not
yet centered in the risen and glorified Lord.
It is absolutely essential for the believer to learn the scriptural difference between
his relationship to earth and heaven, the flesh and the Spirit, Judaism and Christianity.
Only from the Pauline epistles will the Holy Spirit minister this Christian truth to him.
Then, when established and hid with Christ in God, he can be ministered to by the
remainder of the Word without being drawn from his position in Christ, who is his life.
